    Footnote:
There is evidence of scagliola decoration in ancient Roman architecture. This form of decoration evolved to become extremely popular in Italian Baroque buildings of the 17th century and endured in Grand Tour objects through the 19th century. This particular method of forming a composite from selenite from the Appennini Mountains in Emilia and Tuscany, lime, glue and natural pigments to imitate marble, hard stones and even wood lent itself to endless decorative uses and competed with more expensive pietre dure ornament.

The Seyter family had German origins and the first artist in the family was Daniel Seyter, painter to the Italian court (1649 - 1705), known as Daniele Fiammingo (the Flemish). His sons Pietro and Amedeo along with Amedeo's daughter Tarsilla Vittoria worked in Turin and Rome in the medium of scagliola. Their scagliola work is characterized by the simulation of trompe l'oeil engravings on marble or wood. A smaller landscape work by Tarsilla Vittoria Seyter sold Drouot, Paris, 9 June 2011, lot 124.
