"Report of the Krakatoa Committee of the Royal Society, recording the many effects of the violet eruption which peaked on 27th August 1883, killing more than 36,000 people and destroying most of the island and its archipelago. Seismic activity was reported for several months in one of the most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. Subsequent temperatures fell, weather patterns remained unsettled for several years with abnormally high rainfall in America, high winds, acid rain and spectacular sunsets as depicted in the frontispiece. This was naturally of great interest to the Royal Society and a Committee was formed to study the phenomenon and record the many reports received by them - this comprehensive work is the fruit of their labour."
