Primorskiy Kay, Russia
Iron, IIB, Coarsest Octahedrite
Witnessed Fall: 1947, February 12, 10:38
Total Known Mass: 23,000 MT

Sikhote-Alin is the largest meteorite fall of our time. Occurring deep in the Taiga Forest, the strewnfield associated with this is over 6 km long and had more than 106 impact holes up to 28 meters in diameter. The area looked like it had been bombed with trees ripped apart, deep holes gouged in the Earth and giant scraps of metal strewn about. Many Sikhote-Alin Irons exploded in the air and are shaped like shrapnel indicating the high velocity pressure upon entering our atmosphere.

This complete individual specimen beautifully showcases a fiery birth with its deep thumbprint-like regmaglypts and molten flight patterns rippling along a polished rind of fusion crust.

weighing 215 g; measuring 3 x 1.75 x 1 in (76.2 x 44.45 x 25.4 mm)
