Description:

Mundrabilla individual

Mundrabilla Station, Western Australia, Australia
Iron, Octahedrite, IAB (ungrouped)
Discovery: 1911

In 1911 Mr. Harry Kent, the foreman in charge of camels for the Western Australian survey of the Transcontinental Railway route, found an iron meteorite fragment weighing 112 g. Then again in 1966, geologists Wilson and Cooney found two more larger masses, 11 tons and 5 tons, on the Nullarbor Plains. Chemically and structurally anomalous, many smaller individual specimens have since been recovered by rabbit hunters and meteorite seekers over the years.

This individual fragment with flight features also displays the unique blend of rusty-brown patina that is characteristic of Mundrabilla.

weighing 225 g; measuring 2 x 2.25 x 1 in (69.85 x 63.5 x 25.4 mm)
