(British, 1804-1881)
Common cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), from The Birds of Europe, 1832-1837

Drawn and lithographed by John and Elizabeth Gould and published in their magnificent opus The Birds of Europe in London between 1832 and 1837; hand colored and highlighted. Signed in plate.

  • Provenance: Footnote:
The Birds of Europe were drawn by Gould's wife Elizabeth and later, as for this plate by Edward Lear. Lear worked with Gould for a few years as not only a draughtsman but as a skilled lithographer as well. Gould produced some 3300 plates in total.

Gould employed the master talents of Edward Lear for the first time, and his influence can be seen in many of the plates: "There is no doubt that Edward Lear was the first person to understand the art of lithography, and to use it to its fullest potential. It was a legacy that granted the fabled works of Gould their success, and took them into the forefront of nineteenth-century illustration.

John Gould (along with J.J. Audubon) was without doubt the most accomplished and prolific ornithological artist of the nineteenth century. He lived a long life and travelled extensively so his output numbered over 3000 studies of birds both domestic and exotic. The Birds of Europe comes from early on in Gould's life when he was assisted by his equally capable wife Elizabeth and she is responsible for much of the work at this stage, including this fabulous image of the male and female common cormorant.
