    Provenance:
  • Footnote:
Granville Redmond was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1871. He contracted scarlet fever at around the age of three and when he recovered, he was found to be deaf. This likely prompted his family's decision to move from the East Coast to San Jose, California so he could attend education the Berkeley School for the Deaf. During his term at the school, 1879-1890, Redmond's artistic talents were recognized and encouraged. Upon his graduation, he enrolled in the California School of Design where he studied under Arthur Frank Mathews and Amédée Joullin. In 1893 Redmond won a scholarship to attend the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1895, Redmond's painting Matin d'Hiver was accepted for the Paris Salon.

In 1898, he returned to California and settled in Los Angeles. While living in Los Angeles, he became friends with Charles Chaplin, who admired the natural expressiveness of a deaf person using American Sign Language. Chaplin asked Redmond to help him develop the techniques Chaplin later used in his silent films. Through Chaplin he met Los Angeles neighbor artists Elmer Wachtel and Norman St. Clair. They showed works at the Spring Exhibition held in San Francisco in 1904.

Granville Redmond's depictions of poppy fields are among his most popular and sought-after subjects. In Rolling Hills with California poppies, Redmond creates a beautiful vista with brilliant orange poppies, executed with quick and distinct brushstrokes and masterfully layered in a delicate palette. This work exemplifies his technique of the rule of thirds, where the scene is separated into foreground, middle ground and sky, or in this instance mountains, thus creating breathtaking depth in the composition. In this work, Redmond's distinctive style, blending characteristics of Impressionism, Pointillism and Tonalism, creates a stunning exploration of the contrasts of light and atmosphere in the varied Southern California landscape.
