Description:

Boxhole part slice

Northern Territory, Australia
III AB, Medium Octahedrite
Discovery: 1937
Crater 583' (178 m) wide and 53 feet (16 m) deep
Total Known Weight: 500 kg

In 1937 Joe Webb, a shearer at the Boxhole sheep station took geologist Cecil Madigan to examine a bowl-shaped meteorite crater formed in alluvium near Boxhole Homestead, Northern Territory, in central Australia. Dated to 5400 years, they discovered Nickel-bearing metallic fragments and Iron shale-balls similar to those found at the Henbury meteorite locality 155 miles southwest. The larger masses found were up 82 kg. Because of its size, the crater is thought to have resulted from the explosion of a meteorite on impact, although no fused silica glass has been found at the site.

With a natural edge rolling over two sides, this specimen slice nicely shows on both cut sides the intricate Widmanstätten pattern formed when Nickel-iron meteorites cool one degree per million years in the weightless environment of space.

weighing 109 g; measuring 3 x 1.75 x 1/8 in (76.2 x 44.45 x 3.175 mm)
