  • Provenance: Footnote: From the artist's tag on verso Beaumont states "Her stern tubes leaking, rusted and forlorn, the "Princess" of the Guinea Pig Fleet quietly slips beneath the waters of the lagoon at Kwanjalein, after surviving both bombs."

    During World War II, Arthur Beaumont was a war artist, documenting naval battles. A series of these works were published in National Geographic magazine. After the war he continued producing watercolors of naval activities in China, Japan, Guam, Vietnam and the Antarctic and is best known for his watercolors of ships and harbor scenes as the one here.
