An Italian patinated bronze bust of Dionysus / Plato
mid 19th century

After the Antique, on a travertine stand.

  • Provenance: Footnote:
    This bust is modeled after the example found at Herculaneum, Villa of the Papyri, in 1759. Initially believed to be a likeness of a young Plato, later research suggested that it could depict the god Dionysus. The original is in the collection of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli and is identified as Dionysos-Platon.
  • Dimensions: the bronze height 20in (51cm); width 17in (43cm); depth 13in (33cm)
  • Condition: The later base 8 3/4 x 6 x 6in. Bronze with a dark brown patina overall. General marks, scratches, rubbing and wear. Marble with inherent inclusions and pores.
