Description:

A Regency sterling silver shell form marine centerpiece basket
Robert Garrard, London
1812

After a model by Paul de Lamerie, the handle engraved with heraldic crests and initial M surmounted by a coronet.

    Provenance:

  • The Collection of Fritz & Lucy Jewett, San Francisco, California.

    Footnote:
Paul de Lamerie's workshop produced several basket designs between 1724 and 1751. The decorative elements seen on this basket, including the mermaid handle, shell bowl and dolphin supports directly reference Lamerie's model of 1743-44, now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Gift of Mrs. Widener Dixon and George D. Widener, 1959, #1959-151-6). These characteristics were originally derived from sixteenth and seventeenth century examples. The form proved wildly popular and was copied and interpreted by other English silversmiths within Lamerie's circle including William Cripps, Phillips Garden, Thomas Heming, and beyond.
