    Footnote:
The Commedia dell’Arte was an early form of professional theater which originated in Italy in the 15th century. It involved masked characters and improvised performances based on loosely scripted scenarios. The characters of the commedia usually represent fixed social types, such as foolish old men, devious servants, or military officers full of false bravado.

The standard plots revolved around compelling themes of sex, jealousy, love and aging. Many of the basic plot elements can be traced back to Roman comedies, though some were inspired by contemporary novellas, current events and even local news.

Models of 10 of the more than 300 Commedia cast of characters offered here are the Vecchio (master) Dottore Balanzone and the Zanni (clowns/servants) Arleccino, Beppe-Nappa, Brighella, Colombina, Diamantina, Frittellino, Gioppino, Pulcinella and Scaramuccia.
