A Japanese gilt and patinated horse form koro / censer
Meiji period

Cast to depict a standing stallion with piercing gilt eyes, the abdomen wrapped in a realistically rendered cloth with gilt-decorated Tokugawa mon (family crest), the fitted knot on his back forming the separately cast lid of the censer.

  • Provenance: Footnote:
    The Suiba ('water horse') event was held yearly by the Tokugawa government during the Edo period with horses, like in the present lot, wrapped in family crest decorated hemp-cloths crossing the Sumidagawa river.
  • Dimensions: height 10 1/2in (27cm); width 19in (48cm); depth 4 1/2in (11.5cm)
  • Condition: Nicely modeled. With an even very dark brown patina overall. General marks, scratches, rubbing, wear and spotting to surface. With a loss to front corner of lid.
