Description:

A Chinese Export Famille Rose porcelain armorial rectangular platter

  • Provenance: Footnote:
The armorial bearings on this platter are those of the family of Dacre impaling those of
    Weldon.

The armorial bearings commemorate the marriage of an unidentified gentleman of the
Dacre family to an unidentified lady of the family of Weldon. The Dacre family were of ancient lineage who held lands in the north of England notably in the Counties of Northumberland, Cumberland, and Westmorland as well as elsewhere in England, whilst the lady concerned may well been a member of the Weldon family who were Baronets of Dunmore in the County of Carlow in Ireland or one of the cadet branches of the family. The Weldons who had served the Crown in many offices during the Tudor period were granted the Manor of Swanscomb in the County of Kent in South East England by Queen Elizabeth I. The Swanscomb branch of the family were progenitors of the Irish Weldon baronets.
