Description:

Libyan Desert Glass ventifacted fragment

Saharan Desert, Egypt
Impact Glass, Libyan Glass
Discovery: 1850
Age: 28.5 million years

Impact Glass is similar to tektites in that they form when huge meteorite impacts toss molten rock back up into the atmosphere where they cool and eventually fall back down to Earth. They differ in that they lack the higher cosmic ray penetration found in Tektites indicating they must have congealed much closer to the surface of the Earth.

For thousands of years, man has used this light-colored impact glass to make tools and jewelry. Even King Tut in his burial amulet had a scarab carved from Libyan Glass.

A large ventifacted fragment with great color and clarity, this beautiful table top specimen is an excellent example of its locality and a fine addition to any collection. Back lighting is recommended.

weighing 474 g; measuring 4.25 x 3.5 x 2.5 in (107.95 x 88.9 x 63.5 mm)
