Description:

Gibeon part slice

Nama Land, Namibia
Iron, Fine Ochtahedrite Type IVA
Discovery: 1836
Total Known Weight: 50 tons

"Discovered" in 1836 by Capt. J.E. Alexander of the English Army in Great Namaqualand, Namibia, Gibeon is actually a prehistoric fall with the local Nama people known to have made weapons from the iron they would hammer off of larger chunks of meteorites. By the mid 1800s, European settlers established large cattle ranches and soon recovered even more masses with many weighing from 100 to 500 kg.

Gibeons are known for their distinctive and highly desirable Widmanstätten patterning only formed within the core of a differentiated planetoid or asteroid with a cooling rate only a few degrees per million years in the weightless environment of space. The main mass now resides in the South African Museum in Cape Town and weighs 650 kg.

This lovely Part Slice, with a natural rind over two edges, displays Widmanstätten patterning on one polished side along with several inclusions found throughout.

weighing 602 g; measuring 7.75 x 3.75 x 3/16 in (196.85 x 95.25 x 4.76 mm)
