Description:

Frederick Arthur Bridgman
(American, 1847-1928)
Portrait of a red headed woman, late 1890s
oil on canvas
signed lower left FA Bridgman

18 x 14in (46 x 35.5cm)

Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dr. Ben Pinsky and Terry O'Neill Pinsky.

Footnote: It appears that the model is wearing a diaphanous, antique-style gown suggestive of a chiton fastened by small buttons along the arms. The surface treatment is thinly painted in terms of the attire with quick, short brushwork of the leaves and bush background in the upper right quadrant. Given also that Bridgman focused primarily on themes from antiquity beginning in the late 1890s, a time when he was also experimenting with several different paint handlings, differing especially from the tight handling from his early years of academic training.

From his early years in France and throughout the nineteenth-century, Bridgman loved depicting attractive women with auburn and red hair. The pose of this unidentified woman is also characteristic of Bridgman as he often posed his models with tilted heads and at least one arm angled up to their heads, emphasizing a casualness. He also depicted several women playing with their hair as this red-head is doing.

We thank Dr. Ilene Susan Fort for her expertise and assistance in cataloguing this work and preparing the accompanying comments.

    Condition:
  • Significant craquelure to surface overall. With scattered areas of paint loss. With a 1.5in. vertical tear to lower right quadrant. The surface of the canvas appears to have been abraded or overcleaned, as in the lower, middle area near the bottom edge. The canvas may have been cut-down as the edges of the canvas are irregular.

The printed signature appears to be mostly by Bridgman. Someone, at some time, however, seems to have retouched the capital "B" and the lower-case "r". The touchup might have been to strengthen these two letters, but it was poorly done
