Description:

A pair of 19th Century engravings of Charles Garnier's Paris Opera.
The first volume of engravings of Le Nouvel Opéra de Paris (part of a total of 8 volumes) was published in 1878 to celebrate Garnier's architectural designs. The Opera was originally commissioned by Napoleon III as part of the reconstruction of Paris under Baron Haussmann in the second half of the 19th century. Charles Garnier, a Scottish architect, won the competition to design the new opera house. Construction on the opera commenced in 1860 and was completed in 1875.
