post 1950

  • Provenance: Footnote:
This 'Gothic' pattern appears to have been invented in 1770 for Sir John Griffin for the stone-painted chapel chairs at Audley End, Essex. The form corresponds to that of the vaulted ceiling of the Griffin family pew, which was designed in 1768, inspired by studies of Westminster Abbey.

  • Condition: Structurally sound. With a deep brown stained surface. Variations to dimensions and upholstery as visible in catalogue photo. Scattered breaks and repair to back. With losses. One with a 10in repair to back right upright joining back. Other with upper section of back rebuilt. Typical marks, nicks, scratches and wear. Upholstery good. Green upholstery faded.
