Description:
A Chinese Export Famille Rose porcelain armorial rectangular platter
-
Provenance:
-
Footnote:
The armorial bearings on this platter are those of The Honourable East India Company.
This platter more than likely came from a service for the use of The Honourable East India Company (HEIC). The company was originally established during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and later re-established by Act of Parliament in 1698. At that time both the former and the new company united with a common purpose to develop trade in East India and beyond. Over two hundred years the company became powerful and influential, seizing control of large parts of the Indian subcontinent, colonized parts of Southeast Asia and Hong Kong after the First Opium War, and maintained trading posts and colonies in the Persian Gulf Residencies. The company rose to account for at very least half of the world's trade during the mid-1700s and early 1800s. It effectively ruled a greater part of India with the support of its own army from 1757 after the Battle of Plassey to 1858 when control was wrested from the company by the passing of the Government of India Act of 1858 by the British Parliament after the result of the Indian Mutiny in 1857. The passing of the 1858 into law allowed the British Crown to assume direct control of India in the form of the new British Raj. Owing to the size of The Honourable East India Company there were undoubtedly many porcelain services commissioned by the company for its use and this platter is one of the surviving pieces from such a service. They probably came in all manner of quality for use by the governors/nabobs to the lesser members of the civil service of the company.
